WORK THAT FITS

Aptitude Tests and Trait Assessments Measure Different Things

An aptitude test asks what you can do well. A trait assessment asks which conditions you can keep going under. Here is the difference and how to use both.

What an aptitude test measures

An aptitude test looks at what you are able to do. It scores numerical, verbal and spatial handling through problems and returns occupations matched to the result. Public employment services run free versions of this. The tests companies use at hiring share the same roots, but they belong to the side doing the selecting, so the purpose differs.

  • Measures ability
  • Scores you on problems
  • Free public versions exist

What aptitude alone leaves open

People pick the job their scores matched and then cannot stay in it. Being able to do something and being able to do it every day are not the same. Someone with a high verbal score can still be drained by a role that means talking to people all day. The ability matched; the conditions did not.

  • Able is not the same as sustainable
  • Matched scores still end in leaving

What a trait assessment measures

Traits show which conditions cost you less effort. Whether you settle when a procedure exists or when you get to design it fresh each time. Whether you need stretches alone or exchange with people. Whether getting it exact is what settles you or getting it out quickly is. When these match, the same work drains you less.

  • Procedure or fresh design
  • Alone or in exchange
  • Exact or fast

Using both together

Narrow the candidates with aptitude, then choose among them by traits. When several roles score similarly, aptitude has nothing to say about which one you will still be in three years later. Choosing by traits alone skips whether you can do the work at all. Different objects, so neither replaces the other.

  • Aptitude narrows the list
  • Traits choose within it

Before you decide to move

When work stops fitting, sometimes the role is the problem and sometimes the conditions are. If the work itself is fine and what wears you down is the stream of interruptions, changing roles reproduces the same week. Separating which one is hurting first makes the stay-or-go decision shorter.

  • Role problem or condition problem
  • Separate first, decide after

How far the free version goes

The free assessment costs nothing. Alongside the type story you get a card for how hard you lean on each way of judging. The full report covers repeating behaviour cycles, and the conditions that drain you at work sit among them.

  • Type story
  • Strength per judging function
  • No payment

Frequently Asked Questions

Which should I take first?

Order matters little. With no candidate occupations yet, an aptitude test builds the list; with several already in hand, traits help you choose.

Where do I take a free aptitude test?

Public employment services run them at no cost. What they measure differs from what we measure.

Does this prepare me for hiring assessments?

No. Hiring assessments belong to the selecting side and follow set question formats. We do not cover practice questions.

Is it free?

The free assessment costs nothing and includes the type story and strength cards.

Cycles that repeat at work

Aptitude can match and the role still not last. These are the cycles that repeat when it does not.
