SEEING YOURSELF

Self-Objectivity and Reflection · What Knowing Yourself Involves

Seeing yourself accurately and reflecting on yourself are different things. Here is the difference, and what knowing yourself actually consists of.

Seeing yourself accurately

It means seeing yourself the way someone else would, from outside rather than inside. Noticing that something you believed you handled well was not handled well belongs here, and so does noticing that something you counted as a shortfall is actually fine. Only ever revising downward is not accuracy.

  • Seen from outside
  • Neither inflated nor deflated
  • Not only revising downward

How reflection differs

Reflection goes back over what happened; accuracy is about seeing the present state correctly. So a person can reflect constantly and still not see themselves. Going over every word from the day, every night, teaches nothing if it ends in reproaching yourself. Reviewing and seeing correctly are not the same act.

  • Reflection: goes back over
  • Accuracy: sees the present
  • Much review, little sight

Why it is hard

Your own behaviour arrives with its reasons attached; other people behaviour arrives as results only. Your lateness had circumstances; their lateness is who they are. Knowing about this does not stop it looking that way. Which is why seeing yourself needs measurement. Thinking harder does not get past the asymmetry.

  • Yours comes with reasons
  • Theirs comes as results
  • Thinking harder does not fix it

What knowing yourself consists of

It is not holding one word for your personality. It is closer to knowing three things: what you check first when deciding, which reactions keep repeating around people, and which conditions drain you. Knowing those three lets you do something different next time the same situation arrives. A single label does not reach that far.

  • What you check first
  • Reactions that repeat
  • Conditions that drain you

If several tests left you with nothing

That is common, because most tests finish at the sorting. A label feels accurate in the moment and gives you nothing to use the following week. Receiving strengths instead of a label changes what is left over. When how hard you lean on each function comes back as a number, that number decides what to do.

  • Most tests end at the sorting
  • Strengths instead of a label

What Beyond Persona measures

It separates ways of judging and measures how hard you lean on each. Rather than closing with a type name it shows the strength of each function separately, and flags any function that runs strong outside your type profile. The free assessment costs nothing and includes the type story and the strength cards.

  • Strength, not a label
  • Flags functions outside the profile
  • No payment

Frequently Asked Questions

How does seeing yourself accurately differ from reflecting?

Reflection goes back over what happened; accuracy is about the present state. Constant review does not guarantee clear sight.

I cannot seem to see myself clearly. What helps?

Your behaviour comes with reasons attached and other people behaviour does not, so thinking alone struggles. Measuring is faster.

I took several tests and they all felt the same.

Most of them end at the sorting. Receiving a separate strength for each function changes what you are left with.

Cycles that get in the way of seeing yourself

These repeat when reviewing happens and clear sight does not.
