ENFP and INFJ Compatibility

When ENFP and INFJ first meet, they recognize each other quickly. Both spend a long time thinking about why people act the way they do, and both look at what someone really feels before what they say. The trouble starts after that. The ENFP says what they feel as they feel it, while the INFJ says less about themselves so the other person will be comfortable. When this goes on for a long time, the INFJ grows tired alone.

Are ENFP and INFJ compatible?

This pair often appears as a good match on compatibility charts. Both are very interested in people, and they care less about how someone looks on the outside than about what that person is going through.

Their conversations get personal quickly. Topics they would discuss with others only after months, these two discuss within a couple of meetings. The INFJ rarely talks about themselves but often does with an ENFP, because the ENFP listens without judging.

They also clearly complement each other. The ENFP gets the INFJ out of the house and introduces them to new people. The INFJ helps the ENFP sort out which of the many things they have started actually matter.

Still, being known as a good match is a different matter from actually lasting.

Where do ENFP and INFJ clash?

The biggest issue is how each talks about hard things. When the ENFP is struggling, they say so right away. When the INFJ is struggling, they first think of how worried the other person will be and say they are fine. So the ENFP believes the INFJ really is fine.

While the INFJ keeps it to themselves, nothing seems wrong. Then one day the INFJ suddenly contacts the ENFP less. To the ENFP it feels like it happened with no warning, but the INFJ has been waiting a long time for the right moment to say something.

They also need different amounts of social time. The ENFP comes back from seeing many people with more energy. The INFJ uses up all their energy at the same gathering and spends days afterward quietly. When the ENFP keeps introducing people with good intentions, the INFJ goes along because saying no feels bad.

Jealousy and misunderstanding also start here. The ENFP is friendly to everyone. The INFJ knows that friendliness is not reserved for them, yet still feels uneasy about it.

What is an ENFP and INFJ relationship like?

Early in the relationship, the INFJ's feelings often grow faster, because they have not met someone who really listens to them in a long time. The ENFP shows the same level of interest in many people, so the INFJ wants to confirm that they are different.

They also express affection differently. The ENFP often says they love the other person. The INFJ, instead of saying it, prepares what the other person needs ahead of time. The ENFP needs to hear the words to feel secure, and the INFJ waits for their care to be noticed.

In an argument, the INFJ is the first to stop talking, because they know that speaking now would lead to hurtful words. The ENFP finds the silence hard to bear and keeps asking. The more they ask, the less the INFJ says.

Many of these couples last a long time. Neither takes relationships lightly, and once they decide, they do not change their minds easily.

Is it different with an ENFP woman and an INFJ man?

Whether someone is a man or a woman does not change ENFP or INFJ personality. What changes is how people around them react to the same behavior.

ENFPs of either gender get along easily with people. But an ENFP man who does this is said to have a wide network, while an ENFP woman sometimes hears that she is friendly with anyone. INFJs of either gender rarely talk about their feelings, but an INFJ man is called hard to understand, while an INFJ woman is called oversensitive.

When an ENFP woman and an INFJ man are together, the ENFP woman tends to take the role of meeting people and making new friends for the two of them, while the INFJ man takes the role of sorting things out between the two of them. If the INFJ man says little, people around them think the ENFP woman is looking after the relationship by herself.

When an ENFP man and an INFJ woman are together, the INFJ woman hears those remarks more. When she stays quiet, she is called oversensitive, and when she says something is hard, she is called dramatic. So she says even less, and the ENFP man believes she is fine.

What helps an ENFP and INFJ relationship last?

With an INFJ, asking specifically what was hard works better than asking whether they are okay. Asked whether they are okay, the INFJ almost always says yes. Asked which gathering was hardest today, they finally talk.

The ENFP needs to hear often that they are loved. The INFJ feels that words are unnecessary because they are already showing care, but the ENFP feels uneasy without hearing it.

Plan social schedules together in advance. If the ENFP knows how many days the INFJ needs to recover, they can time the gatherings they want to introduce them to.

When the INFJ goes quiet, it is better to ask why without pressing for an answer. Saying they do not have to answer today but could talk tomorrow gives the INFJ time to get ready to talk.

Why do ENFP and INFJ couples turn out so differently?

Some ENFP and INFJ couples stay together for ten years. Others break up within six months.

One difference is how long someone keeps a hurt to themselves. Some INFJs bring up a hurt within three days, and others say nothing for half a year. The longer they wait, the bigger the shock when they finally speak. On the ENFP side, some can wait patiently while the other person is silent and some cannot bear it for even a day.

Types tell you only what each person looks at first.

How long someone stays silent and how long someone can wait vary widely within the same type. That is why the Beyond Persona relationship analysis compares the 36 traits each person measured rather than their types.

Frequently asked

My INFJ is suddenly contacting me less. Do they want to break up?

Sometimes, but not always. INFJs spend time thinking alone before they put things into words. Still, it is worth asking yourself whether they sent several signals before this that went unnoticed. When an INFJ goes quiet, it is usually not the first time.

My ENFP is warm to other people too. How should I see that?

ENFPs show interest even in people they have just met, so that alone tells you little. The way to tell is where they spend their time. Being warm to many people is different from spending a lot of time with one person.

My INFJ says they are fine no matter what I ask. What should I do?

Narrow the question and they will answer. Asked how their day was, they say it was fine, but asked which comment at that gathering bothered them most, they answer specifically.

If both of us care so much about feelings, won't our arguments get bigger?

The difference is less in the size of the argument than in how fast each recovers. The ENFP feels better soon after talking, while the INFJ keeps thinking about it for days afterward. So the ENFP can consider something finished while the INFJ is still sorting it out.
