ENTJ and INTP Compatibility

ENTJ and INTP both judge by what is right and wrong, so they quickly find it easy to talk. Neither leads with emotion, so hard feelings tend not to last after an argument. Where they differ is when to stop. The ENTJ wants to decide quickly, and the INTP wants to examine things further. This difference shows up at work, and it shows up in exactly the same way when they are dating.

Are ENTJ and INTP compatible?

In terms of conversation, they are. Neither softens what they say for fear of hurting the other's feelings. If they think something is wrong, they say so, and the person hearing it is rarely upset. Conversations that required care with other types, these two can have comfortably.

What each gives the other is also clear. The INTP finds the flaws the ENTJ missed, such as which part of a plan will not work or which assumption is wrong. The ENTJ turns what the INTP has only been thinking about into something that actually gets done.

The problem comes after that. The INTP's search for flaws never ends. The ENTJ believes that at some point they have to stop and start, while the INTP asks why they are rushing when things are still uncertain. In the same situation, one is frustrated and the other is anxious.

Where do ENTJ and INTP clash?

The argument they have most often is about deadlines. The ENTJ sets a date and finishes by it. The INTP looks at whether the content is right before looking at the date. So when the ENTJ asks when something will be done, the INTP seems to be avoiding the question. In fact, they are not saying because they do not know yet.

The way the ENTJ gives instructions also causes trouble. The ENTJ says exactly what to do and how. If the INTP is not convinced of why it should be done that way, they do not start. They may say yes and then not do it.

Time alone divides them too. The INTP needs long stretches of time to sort out their thoughts, and the ENTJ sometimes sees that time as idleness. The INTP, for their part, does not understand why the ENTJ keeps starting new projects without a break.

Both are poor at dealing with feelings. When a problem becomes about feelings, the ENTJ offers a solution first and the INTP leaves the room. So this pair settles arguments that logic can solve, but hurt feelings last a long time.

What is an ENTJ and INTP relationship like?

The ENTJ usually starts things. If interested, they ask to meet and set the next date that same day. The INTP tends not to get in touch first until they are sure the other person is interested, so this approach suits them.

Their conversations go well while dating. If a topic interests them both, they can talk about it for hours. Even when they disagree, they are not upset and find it enjoyable.

Showing affection is harder for them. Neither says "I like you" very often. The ENTJ does practical things instead, and the INTP spends time together instead. So even though nothing is wrong between them, no one says anything at the moments when reassurance is needed.

What happens after an argument is unusual. These two often skip apologizing and act as if nothing happened the next day. That can be comfortable, but when this happens several times without being resolved, one day one of them suddenly ends the relationship.

Is it different with an ENTJ man and an INTP woman?

Swapping the genders in this pair does not change either personality. What changes is how people around them react.

INTPs of either gender show little emotion. Yet an INTP man is called rational, while an INTP woman is called cold or hard to approach. ENTJs of either gender make quick decisions, but for an ENTJ man this is often seen as decisiveness, and for an ENTJ woman as being high-handed.

When an ENTJ man and an INTP woman are together, both pay less attention to what others say, since neither cares much about such judgments. That is one comfortable thing about this pair.

When an ENTJ woman and an INTP man are together, people have more to say. The relationship is called strange simply because the woman is the one who decides. Nothing is wrong between the two of them, but the remarks from outside can tire them.

What helps an ENTJ and INTP relationship last?

For the ENTJ, the task is to give the reason along with the request. If they only say what to do, the INTP does not start. Adding one line about why is usually enough for the INTP to follow right away. The INTP is not objecting. They need to be convinced.

For the INTP, the task is to say when they will know. If they only say they do not know yet, the ENTJ assumes they are avoiding the question. If they say they will know in three days, the ENTJ waits until then.

It is a good idea to make a rule for talking about hurt feelings. Neither brings feelings up, so problems grow quietly. Set a time, even once a month, to ask each other what has been bothering you lately.

Planning time alone in advance is also needed. That way the ENTJ does not see the INTP's quiet time as laziness, and the INTP can use that time without worrying about how it looks.

Keeping work separate from the relationship helps too. These two types work well together, so they tend to judge matters between them by goals and results as well. Getting things done and being comfortable together are two different things, so it is better to set aside time when they do not talk about work.

Why do ENTJ and INTP couples turn out so differently?

Among ENTJ and INTP couples, some say the other is the person they talk with most easily, and some say they are too frustrated to stand it.

One difference is whether someone can start without being fully convinced. Some INTPs cannot begin at all without knowing the reason, and others begin and understand along the way. Whether the ENTJ can wait also varies. Some ENTJs wait for the other person's pace, and others cannot. Whether each can put hurt feelings into words is different from person to person too.

What the types tell you is roughly that both judge by right and wrong. Whether someone can wait, or can start without knowing why, differs from person to person, so Beyond Persona measures 36 traits separately and compares both people's results.

Frequently asked

Are ENTJ and INTP a bad match?

It is hard to call them a bad match. They talk well together, and their arguments do not last long. On the other hand, both are poor at expressing feelings, so hurt feelings quietly add up. Rather than counting their arguments, count how often something went unsaid.

My INTP says yes and then does not do it.

They were not convinced. INTPs do not start until they have worked out why something needs to be done that way. They do not argue at that moment because they do not want a fight. If you ask again with one line explaining why, it is usually settled.

My ENTJ keeps rushing me. What should I do?

Tell them when you will know. ENTJs rush because they do not know when it will end. They will wait if they have an estimated time, even without an exact answer. If you keep saying only that you do not know, they will keep asking.

Neither of us apologizes. Is that okay?

It is fine for now, but hurt feelings remain. This pair tends to act as if nothing happened the next day, so it is easy to leave things unresolved. If apologizing is hard, you can instead state plainly what went wrong.
