They have usually worked out several answers already, and for each one they also consider the conditions under which it would be wrong. That is why choosing one takes them longer than it takes most people.
This makes their judgments accurate. They find the exceptions others missed, and they notice at once when an explanation is inconsistent. When someone demands a decision, though, they seem frustrating. By their own standard, they simply have not finished checking.
They base their judgment on their own reasoning rather than on what others think. Even if everyone else agrees, they will not go along until the idea makes sense by their own logic. They reach a conclusion only after they have checked that every step is consistent.
This causes trouble for them when a task has a deadline. The deadline gets closer and the checking is still not done, so they end up deciding everything at the last minute. Those last-minute decisions are usually accurate, but because no one else saw the work behind them, people assume they were careless.
An INTP stays interested as long as a problem is unsolved. The moment they understand how it works, they lose most of their interest. What is left is carrying out something they already understand, over and over.
So they often quit a project halfway through. It is less that they cannot finish things and more that they have already learned what they wanted to know, so they no longer have a reason to continue. When something does need to be finished, it helps to know this ahead of time and set a separate check-in date.
They feel that stating only the conclusion would make it wrong. A claim may be true under some conditions and false under others, and leaving out those conditions feels like saying something untrue. So they add assumptions and exceptions, and the explanation gets long.
The listener asked one question and got three answers, which is tiring. Once both sides know this, the INTP can change the order: give the conclusion first in one sentence, then add the conditions. The content stays the same, but the other person understands far more of it.
INTPs feel comfortable with people who do not rush them toward a conclusion and are curious about how they think. Ask an INTP why they see something a certain way and they will talk for a long time. Conversations like that are how they grow close to someone.
Conflict usually arises over how fast to act. To someone who wants to decide now and get started, the INTP's checking looks like delay. Setting a decision date in advance usually solves it. If both agree on how long the checking can take and that they will decide on that date even with some questions still open, both of them are more comfortable.

INTPs do well with problems that existing explanations do not cover, or where the cause has to be found again. The reason is their habit of checking everything from the beginning instead of adopting someone else's method.
Work that repeats a fixed procedure and judges people by speed leaves an INTP no way to use what they are good at. When nothing is left to examine, they lose motivation.
