So they find another method in problems that others have given up on. In work that already follows a set process, though, they seem like someone who keeps raising objections. They are not trying to get in the way. They can see a better method.
It comes from a habit of deliberately thinking from the opposing side. When they hear a claim, they believe the only way to know how sound it is is to argue against it. So they raise counterarguments even when they agree.
The trouble is that the other person takes the counterargument as an attack. To the ENTP, it is thinking something through together. The other person feels contradicted. If the ENTP says up front that they are only testing the idea, the other person hears the same words very differently.
They stay absorbed only while the outcome is still undecided. At the stage where no one knows how things will turn out, they are deeply engaged. Once the direction is settled and only execution is left, they lose interest.
So they end up with more and more unfinished projects. It is not a lack of ability. Their interest simply does not last until the end. ENTPs who know this about themselves finish the work together with someone else, or add a new goal to the final stage so the work interests them again.
It comes from the way they raise even serious subjects with a joke. For an ENTP, humor is not a way to avoid a subject. It is a way to bring it up. They believe people relax when the conversation starts with a laugh, and only then can the real conversation happen.
When the other person is in a bad state, though, they take this approach as being dismissed. So the ENTP needs to check first whether the other person is in a state to laugh. Depending on that, the same words can comfort or hurt.
ENTPs can talk for a long time with people who do not take a counterargument as an attack. When they trust that an intense discussion will not damage the relationship, they say everything they think.
When a situation calls for stability, the ENTP's approach becomes a problem. If the other person has finally sorted something out and the ENTP wants to change it again, the other person feels their effort has been wasted. Agreeing ahead of time on what will not be changed reassures the other person.
