Ni is a way of perceiving that narrows many pieces of information down to one interpretation. It gathers things that seem unrelated on the surface and finds a common cause or direction among them.
That is why a conclusion occurs to them all at once, without steps. The person finds it hard to explain how they got the answer, but because it is often right, they keep trusting that kind of judgment.
It does not use information right away but thinks it over for a while. After considering many pieces of information for a long time, they combine into one at some point, and that is when it reaches a conclusion.
That is why it takes time. Answering a few days later is more accurate than answering right after being asked. When pressed, the person speaks before things are sorted out and is not satisfied with the answer either.
The conclusion is clear, but it is hard to put into words how it was reached. So to the listener, it sounds like a claim supported only by confidence.
Another reason is that it talks about what comes next. While others are discussing the current topic, it talks about what will happen after, which sounds unrelated. Sorting out the current topic first and adding what comes next afterward makes the point much clearer.
It is strong in work with a lot of information where the important parts have to be picked out. Its ability to see a common direction among many pieces of information is what such work needs.
It also suits decisions whose results appear only much later. It thinks ahead about what results a present choice will lead to.
They work in opposite directions. Ni narrows many possibilities down to one, and Ne comes up with many possibilities from one.
So they reach different results from the same material. Ni asks what it ultimately means, and Ne asks what else can be done with it. Both are intuitive functions, but one reduces the possibilities and the other adds to them.
When Ni is very strong, interpretation comes before the facts that can be checked now. It sometimes treats things that have not happened yet as already decided and turns out to be wrong.
At a moderate level, it checks the facts while also judging what comes next. When Ni is weak, the person pays close attention to what is in front of them but thinks little about how things will turn out.
The assessment results also show how strong Ni is. Even within the same type, people with different Ni scores judge in very different ways.
