Fi (Introverted Feeling): How It Judges and Why It Is Misunderstood

Fi judges by whether something fits the values it holds inside. Even if others think something is good, it will not choose it if it goes against its own standard.

What is Fi?

Fi is a way of judging by whether something fits the values held inside. It decides right and wrong by checking internally, not by outside rules.

This standard is hard to put into words. When asked why, the person finds it hard to answer, but that does not mean the standard is unclear. In fact, it rarely changes, so it lasts.

What does Fi look at when it chooses?

It first checks internally whether something fits. It asks whether a choice is something it can accept, and if not, it will not choose it even if the benefit is large.

It also understands other people's feelings through its own experience. When it has been through something similar, it understands deeply, and it tries not to speak carelessly about things it has not experienced.

Why does Fi seem fickle?

It seems easygoing on the outside but suddenly says no at some point. It goes along with most things, but it will not agree to requests that go against its own standard.

Because it does not explain that standard, the people around it see this as fickleness. Making clear in advance what is fine and what is not reduces this misunderstanding.

What is Fi useful for?

It is strong in work that takes long, steady effort before results appear. It can keep going by its own standard even without anyone else's approval.

It also suits work that requires understanding people deeply. It looks not at what someone says on the surface but at what that person is actually trying to protect.

How is Fi different from Fe?

They keep their standard in different places. Fi uses the values it holds inside. Fe uses the state of the people it is with.

So they react differently when there is conflict. Fi first asks whether it can accept the situation, and Fe first asks how the people around it will be affected. Both are feeling functions, but they keep their standard in opposite places.

What happens when Fi is strong?

When Fi is very strong, compromise is hard. If the person keeps doing things that go against their standard, they may seem to be coping on the outside, but inside they become very tired.

At a moderate level, they consider both their own standard and the situation. When Fi is weak, they follow outside standards, so decisions are easy, but later they are not sure what they actually wanted.

The strength of Fi is also shown separately in the assessment. Even within the same type, people with different Fi scores make very different choices.
