Judging and perceiving

Ne (Extraverted Intuition): How It Perceives and Why It Is Misunderstood

Ne sees one thing and thinks of many related possibilities. Rather than what is there now, it first thinks about what more could be done with it.

What is Ne?

Ne is a way of perceiving that sees one thing and thinks of many related possibilities. It does not leave what it is given as it is but considers other ways to use it and conditions to change.

That is why the topic of conversation often changes. It is not bringing up something unrelated but talking about something connected to what was just said, yet to the listener it sounds like a change of subject.

How does Ne come up with new ideas?

It changes the conditions. Instead of leaving things as they are, it keeps testing what would change if one thing were removed or added.

So it creates several answers before settling on one. Creating is more fun than choosing, so when it has to pick one, it sometimes puts off the decision.

Why does Ne seem scattered?

It says things as soon as they occur to it. Because it speaks before sorting things out, the listener finds it hard to tell what the conclusion is.

Another reason is that it can seem unserious. It keeps offering alternatives to a method that has already been decided, which looks like slowing the work down. Separating what needs to be decided now from what can be looked at later reduces this misunderstanding.

In what situations is Ne helpful?

It is strong in work that the usual methods can no longer improve. It combines what is available in new ways and creates new methods.

It also suits work that is just starting. When nothing has been decided, it produces several options and starts the discussion.

How is Ne different from Ni?

They work in opposite directions. Ne comes up with many possibilities from one, and Ni narrows many possibilities down to one.

So they find different things hard. Ne finds it hard to choose one of the options it has created, and Ni finds it hard to explain a conclusion it has already reached to other people.

What changes with the strength of Ne?

When Ne is very strong, the person starts many things and finishes few. While new possibilities keep occurring to them, it is hard to stay focused until the end.

At a moderate level, they come up with many options but can also bring them together. When Ne is weak, they use the method they are given as it is, so they are steady but rarely look for other ways.

The strength of Ne is also shown separately in the assessment. Even within the same type, people with different Ne scores approach new work very differently.
