When everyone has to get drenched in your emotional storm

One person's emotional storm transmits to the whole group, and everyone nearby vibrates with it. Fired lightly, it is a gift for expression and empathy; fired heavily, it becomes a mode in which the people around end up carrying the emotional labor.
When a feeling rises, the people around have to know, and once they know, they have to move with it. Whoever cries along is an ally; whoever keeps their feelings to themselves is cold — sharing emotion becomes the yardstick of closeness.
Decisions made at an emotional peak — the sudden resignation, the breakup announcement, the big purchase — come back as regret a few days later. If the same thing happens again at the next peak, that is a sign this circuit has spread into the territory of decisions.
Psychology distinguishes emotional expression from emotional contagion. Expression makes a feeling known while the responsibility for carrying it stays with its owner; contagion has no boundary, so the people nearby absorb the same vibration as their own. The same tears can be communication when a boundary exists — and someone else's emotional labor when it doesn't.
The same pattern plays out differently in relationships at a light firing and a heavy one. Kept light, it remains an expressive asset and recovery comes quickly; as it deepens, the burnout and departure of people nearby accumulate, and the metabolic cycle of one's own emotions becomes exhausting too.
