FIRED PATTERN

The Junkie

Chasing the next, stronger hit — and living only in the now

What this pattern is

This pattern fires when three things combine: a powerful impulse that responds instantly to sensory stimulation in the present moment, a gap where the circuit for stopping and delaying should be, and a second gap where the question of what tomorrow is for should live. Stimulation moves in to fill the space meaning has left empty — and as each level of stimulation dulls, a stronger one becomes necessary. The structure builds itself.

How it shows up in daily life

The infinite scroll before sleep, the daily rewards of a game, late-night food and sugar, the one drink that becomes two. Life runs in units of an hour, a day, this week — and the time beyond that stays blurry. The hand moves before the will to stop has even come online.

The signal of this pattern is the emptiness that surfaces the moment the stimulation stops. If you keep jumping to the next stimulus before the question why am I doing this can finish forming, that can be a sign that stimulation has stopped being pleasure and started being escape.

Enjoying something and being bound to it are not the same

Psychology distinguishes between the circuit that wants something and the circuit that actually enjoys it. As the structure of addiction deepens, wanting grows while enjoyment shrinks — craving more and liking it less. The same game, the same night out: the person who still feels the pleasure and the person left with only the urge are standing in entirely different places.

Every pattern has an intensity

At lower intensity, this stays at the level of weekend gaming and the occasional drink, with work and relationships intact. As it deepens, sleep, work, and relationships pay the price in turn, and the required dose keeps climbing. In the deepest range it becomes hard to turn around alone, and outside help becomes necessary. Your own firing intensity, and what to do about it, are part of your assessment results.
